Sahara Orphan

Operations Manager Boyd from Calgary with his new friend.
Our civil works construction contractors have a camp near our base for their staff. Last month, one of their workers spotted a camel down in the desert. When they investigated, they found a newborn calf with the dead mother. They took the calf to their base and have been bottle feeding her, about 6 litres of milk per day. Her name is Souad, a common girl's name in Algeria, the same as one of the Administrators here at the camp.
While we were there, she was in and out of the guard shack, chewed on the antenna of our car, and tasted the rear bumper.
She is very imprinted to people, and not timid at all, following us around like a puppy. I will definitely be going back to check on her progress.

Almancil Michelin 1 star Restaurant

We heard about a good restaurant in Almancil that is rated a Michelin *, they offer a lunch special with a 2 course meal for 13 euro. It was a fabulous experience, the food and presentation was amazing and the service was great. What a deal!

Mary and I, we started with a broccoli shot, it was hot and very good.

This is our main course, Mary had chicken and I had the fish. We started with a veal pate with salad and cranberry sauce.

We decided to go all out and order desert. The people around us were having it and it looked incredible so we indulged. It started with a berry delight, strawberries, raspberry puree with apple froth.
We ordered two different deserts and shared. The chocolate desert had a variety of different choices and the pear was done in both white and red wine with rice pudding. They were delicious!
We finished with coffee and flavoured wafers. It was a great lunch out!

Afternoon in Faro

Mary and I spent the afternoon in Faro near the old village and marina checking out the sites.

Coffee time.
Pedestrian streets near the Faro marina and city centro.

Street in the old village.
The architecture and detail of these old buildings is amazing.

Another pedestrian street in Faro, look at the sidewalk, the detail of the tiles is incredible.

The drive home in rush hour. Some graphite on the walls which is quite frequently found in the Algarve. Quite a contradiction in sites.

Silves

We made a trip to the town of Silves where there is a historic castle that is very well preserved and is also being excavated and restored. It is a very popular tourist location in the Algarve.
Looking over the town of Silves, the castle and the church on the left on the highest point of the town.

Entrance into the castle.
Inside the castle grounds.

View of some of Silves from a castle wall.
The excavation ongoing inside the castle walls.

Silves - Church

Touring in the town of Silves which has some historic sites and is a popular tourist location. This is a view of the church and townsite from a castle wall.

The church has amazing stained glass windows, sorry the picture does not do it justice.

A street just to the left of the church looking up to the top of the old town and the castle.

A very quaint looking restaurant just below the castle, the church is just to the left of the street.

Lunch in the old town, we had the tourist special which was an amazing value, with soup and starter and the fish of the day, desert and wine for 12 euro each. Very yummy and great atmosphere.
